Westlake, OH – Happy Earth Day 2022! The Elon Musk Foundation in cooperation with XPRIZE set out a year ago on Earth Day 2021 to launch the most comprehensive search for emerging carbon capture technologies in history. The contest sets a very high bar with the largest innovative technology prizes ever offered totaling at least $100 million by 2025.

After the first year of competition, 70 of the world’s leading environmental scientists and practitioners analyzed over 1,300 leading carbon capture technologies from around the globe and advanced 20% of them including Pavement Technology’s PlusTi solutions for roadway microenvironment vehicular emission capture and sequestration.

“We are pleased the XPRIZE judges looked outside the traditional land and ocean carbon capture box to include green road technologies and the only photocatalytic based technology to advance from their deliberations. Mobile sourced emissions are now the #1 source for both GHG accumulations and photochemical smog contaminations. The roadway microenvironment and transportation infrastructure are a critical target for climate change mitigation strategies and XPRIZE recognizes such,” said Michael Durante, Vice President Strategic Planning for Pavement Technology, Inc.

PlusTi leverages state-of-the-art photocatalytic technology (PCT) and traditional pavement preservation formulas creating the world’s first scalable TiO2 enhancement to produce ultra-low emission pavements.

TiO2 is a powerful, yet eco-friendly catalyst capable of removing critical climate damaging pollutants including those emitted by vehicles e.g., NOx and tire-wear microplastic particles. TiO2 also creates a solar reflective top boundary that creates so-called “cool pavements” essential to managing urban heat islands.

In both field and standardized lab testing, PlusTi has shown to remove up to 60% of vehicular emissions and improve pavement solar emissivity by as much 400%.

PlusTi has been deployed in (and around) numerous major US cities to date including Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron, Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham, Charleston, Greenville, Orlando, Orlando International Airport, Delray Beach, Phoenix, Tucson and Tempe. PlusTi is supported by numerous US and Canadian patents and now available commercially.

“Communities are now taking climate change head-on one road, one neighborhood, and one city at a time,” Durante continued.

Happy Earth Day!

FOR RELEASE ON 2/21/2022

Westlake, OH – The City of Tucson, AZ recently partnered with the University of Arizona to evaluate the performance attributes of a new surface treatment for asphalt pavements designed specifically to reduce pavement emissivity (i.e., a surface’s ability to emit radiant heat), thereby mitigating the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect that causes health concerns and rapidly deteriorates the quality of pavements.

The City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation and Mobility applied a PlusTi asphalt rejuvenation treatment developed by Westlake, Ohio-based Pavement Technology, Inc. (PTI) on a portion of Country Club Road in December 2021. The treatment deploys photocatalytic technology that reduces emissivity by tripling the solar reflectance value (SRI) of pavements. This new technology also meets the USGBC’s LEED and APWA/ISI ENV requirements for UHI reduction.

Tucson is a member of the Global Cool Cities Alliance (GCCA). This pilot project was developed in collaboration with the GCCA’s Cool Roadways Partnership, a consortium of jurisdictions, organizations and manufacturers committed to achieving scalable deployment of cool roadway options that foster heat-resilient communities.

Previous testing by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute at numerous pilot sites around the United States has demonstrated significant improvements in the SRI values of pavements treated with PlusTi technology. The University of Arizona will be conducting complementary testing related to human comfort factors, which are an adverse side effect of older albedo (aka “White asphalt”) products. Unlike albedo techniques, which cool pavement surfaces only, PlusTi roadway solutions embed into pavements UV-reflective TiO2 nanoparticles that are able to reduce emissivity and the air temperatures of surround areas at scale.

Michael Durante, PTI’s vice president of finance & strategic planning, explains: “Albedo products are very effective on roofs to lower BED (Building Electricity Demand), but are more problematic on pavements due to durability, aesthetics and human comfort concerns. In contrast, UV technology reflects thermal energy rather than absorbing it, targeting emissivity to capture a 24-hour cycle through which daytime energy is absorbed and then later remitted when night arrives.”

The results of the study are expected to be published later in 2022, and will be made available at PTI’s www.smogeatingroads.com website at that time. For more information, contact Chris Evers at cevers@pavetechinc.com or your local PTI technical representative, or visit the Global Cool Cities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PTI Partnership with Raleigh NC Earns Cleantech Impact Award

Westlake, OH – The Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC) recently awarded The City of Raleigh its Cleantech Impact Award in the Transportation category for its partnership with Pavement Technology, Inc. (PTI). Specifically cited was the City of Raleigh’s Pollution Remediation, Heat Island Reduction and Pavement Preservation project, which used PTI’s TiO2- enhanced PlusTi technology.

According to RTCC, “At the completion of the pilot project, treated roads showed a 37 percent reduction in nitrogen oxides, which are a type of roadway contaminant, and an average Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 38.2—a nearly 400 percent improvement over the untreated locations.”

PTI technical representative Ken Holton, who recommended PTI’s PlusTi A.R.A.-1 Ti®, an asphalt rejuvenator / sealer for this project explains, “This TiO2-enhanced asphalt rejuvenator combines Maltene Replacement Technology (MRT) to revitalize and seal aging asphalt with Photo Catalytic Technology (PCT), which removes nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and other airborne and vehicular pollutants. Raleigh was looking for a solution that would reduce not only pollution, but the heat island effect in the city. PlusTi A.R.A.-1 Ti® was a perfect fit.”

The company’s PlusTi asphalt rejuvenator increases the solar-reflective index of the top surface, reducing heat absorption and related radiative forcing (RF) by materially reducing the convective re-release of UV radiation that would otherwise contribute to the heat island effect common in our urban centers. The chemistry also slows down pavement oxidation, thereby further extending the service life of treated surfaces.

According to Michael Durante, PTI’s vice president of finance & strategic planning, “The PlusTi family of pavement life-extending, environmentally responsible penetrants assist communities with compliance with the U.S. EPA’s stringent National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS), and in earning the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED V.4 Heat Island Reduction credits, providing our communities with a robust and realistic path toward meeting the challenges of climate change in our built environment.”

RTCC is a collaborative effort on the part of businesses, government, academics and non-profits committed to accelerating the growth of a “cleantech” economy in North Carolina’s Research Triangle region. The GCCA has been working to accelerate a worldwide transition to cooler, healthier cities since 2010.
