One weekend, while stationed at a job site in Florida, PTI crew member Tom Donegan and Supervisor Norm Sabol spent their entire weekend at the beach, getting up early, putting on lots of sun block, and heading for the sun.

Tom recalls, “You really can have some close encounters with the wild down there. We’ve come across all kinds of animals — pelicans, cranes, alligators, tortoises, frogs, wild boar. One time I even saw a bobcat.

“The East coast of Florida is a great place to work. Over in Palm Bay, there’s a Cuban bakery that makes the best Cuban sandwiches ever. We eat there every day when we’re in the area, having a sandwich and an espresso with steamed milk. We place our orders in broken Spanish. After work and on weekends, we head out on our excursions and just enjoy the day.”

Smoky Mountains, NC

PTI Supervisor Norm Sabol and crew member Tom Donegan are friends as well as co-workers. On their time off, they love to go hiking. According to both men, the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina are an ideal spot for a weekend adventure.

Tom Donegan reports, “North Carolina is one of our favorite places to work. The red leaves in the fall out in Maggie Valley are just phenomenal. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a terrific place to go trekking…it’s got waterfalls, and the trails are awesome!”

Charlotte County, FL – Port Charlotte

According to PTI crew member, Tom Donegan, the beaches at Port Charlotte are an ideal location for after-work summer trekking. He jokingly refers to himself as a proud member of “The Gentlemen’s Adventure Club,” and frequently invites other crew members to join him exploring in their off hours.

“The Charlotte Harbor waterfront is terrific. They have this pavilion where there’s always a band playing, Caribbean style, Jamaican reggae, country. You can walk up and down that beach looking for horseshoe crabs, and you never know what you might find.

“Sometimes you don’t even have to wait until after work. This baby gopher tortoise found us right on the job site while we were working down there. These guys are an endangered species and they live in burrows. They’re a sub-species of turtles and can’t swim, so we were careful to put him back onto the sand.”

Most people think of Port Charlotte FL, with its mile-after-mile of beautiful waterways, a popular tourist attraction. But for some friendly critters, it’s much more than that; it’s home.

Thomas Donegan has been a PTI laborer, driver and traffic controller since 2012. When he was working traffic control back in the summer of 2014, he wasn’t really expecting to be directing reptile traffic, but that’s what happened.

He reports “I was just doing my job, walking the site, directing traffic and talking to people when I noticed this little guy just hanging from my pocket. I have no idea how long he’d been climbing up my leg, but I just left him there and he kept me company all day long.

“When the work day ended, I just kind of walked him across the traffic to the side of the road, scooped him off onto a leaf, and watched him hop on away.”
